what is trauma?

Past events that keep popping up in the present are evidence that you've been through something overwhelming. Your brain is trying to process what's happened in the past, so things will keep coming to mind even if you don't want them to.

Not everything that is hard is traumatic, but everything that is traumatic is hard.

Trauma is different than the normal difficulties or challenges we experience in life. It overwhelms our natural abilities to heal and move past a difficult event. Emotional and psychological trauma results from a stressful event, or multiple stressful events, that shatter our sense of security, making us feel helpless in a dangerous world.

It might be simple (a single event), complex (deeply rooted and multi-faceted), compounding (layer upon layer), and/or developmental (grounded in childhood).

how does trauma affect ME?

Evidence of trauma can manifest in a variety of ways.

You might notice strain in your relationships. Perhaps you're relying on substances to manage stress. You might experience generalized anxiety or depression.

Traumatic experiences change our brain and are stored in the body, which is why we get emotionally overwhelmed and have difficulty coping. Sometimes we even have physical pain, discomfort, or illness.

Trauma can also create utter chaos and disorder in our lives. You might behave in ways that are unrecognizable to you or the people you care about.
